Volunteering with AA

The Augustinians of the Assumption are involved across the world in many different apostolic ventures: any work which can advance the coming of the Kingdom is to be undertaken! This is the meaning of our Rule of Live which says « The apostolate of our Congregation places our communities at the heart of the Church’s mission: to gather all men into the people of God. Our motto: « Thy Kingdom Come » inspires us to work for the coming of Christ’s Reign in us and in the world. Just as the Father sent Him, so Christ sends us, with the promise of his Spirit, to serve our brothers by proclaiming the Gospel. » (RL 13)

For some time now all sorts of lay people, of whatever age or background, have volunteered to work with us for the coming of the Kingdom. Gradually we have set up a framework to enable us to welcome volunteers. It is for a great joy to work with Assumptionist Volunteers involved in the local churches!

Assumption Young Volunteers Programme

The « Assumption Young Volunteers » programme is open to young men from 18 to 30 years of age.

We invite the volunteers to join us and to help us for a period of time in our work for the service of the Kingdom and of the Church. Tasks have been set up in France and abroad.

During the time a volunteer is with us he has a contract which is real but has no legal standing and gives no pension rights. It is not compatible with any paid activity.

1- Professional side

The work for each activity is set out in a Task list. Most of the jobs do not require any particular ability other than motivation and common sense. Each volunteer will be assigned a person whose job is: - to make sure of the direction and training at the start of the volunteer period, - to define the objectives and to check the necessary means are at hand to reach them, - to monitor the volunteer in the fulfilment of his work.

The duration of the involvement in the « Assumption Young Volunteers » programme is flexible: at least of 4 months, it is normally proposed to last 12 months. In some cases the initially fixed duration may be extended.

There is no rigid starting day. Each volunteer starts the period at the most convenient time regarding civil and school year.

The required mission in every job is fulfilled based on a forty hours week. Weekends are normally free. Two and a half days holiday are given for each month spent on the programme and which must be taken before the completion of the agreed length of the commitment to the « Assumption Young Volunteers » programme.

2- Spiritual side

Because the « Assumption Young Volunteers » programme intends to offer works for the coming of the Kingdom, the spiritual dimension is particularly important.

We want the time the volunteer is spending in one of our tasks to help him to deepen his faith. We also want it to be strengthening at the human level.

As a consequence, to take part in the AYV programme it is also to accept: - the community life: besides the pastoral work, the volunteer lives in one of our communities. Therefore the volunteer takes part in the prayer life, the practical life and the relaxation of the community; - a guardian angel: we propose a member of the community will support the volunteer and assist him to draw the maximum benefit from the stresses and joys of the experience with us; - for the volunteers in France, Special times are foreseen when there will be the opportunity to share their experience with other volunteers for 1 or 2 weekends during the year, and take part in the retreat for the young people connected with the Assumption.

3- Miscellaneous

A contract fixing his work and life conditions is signed by the volunteer and one of the Assumptionists in charge of the programme before the start of the volunteer period.

Material aspects:

  • The community takes care of accommodation, meals and laundering. The Assumption pays to the volunteer a monthly amount of 150 euros as being pocket money.
  • For the stays of 12 months and longer, the Assumption will provide a round-trip ticket for the volunteer.
  • Insurance and Social Security: as much as possible we wish the volunteer to be covered by himself. If he is not, solutions are looked at as the case may be.

Assumption Lay people Volunteers Programme

The « Assumption Lay people Volunteers » programme is open to everybody from 18 years (necessary to be of age). It is open to bachelor, married, family members.

We invite the volunteers to join us and to help for a period of time in our work for the service of the Kingdom and of the Church. Tasks have been set up in France and abroad. During the time of at least 4 months when the volunteer is with us, he/she has a contract which is real but has no legal standing and gives no pension rights. It is not compatible with any paid activity. If the time is shorter, formalities with the Assumption are easier

1- Professional side

The work for each activity is set out in a Task list. Most of the jobs do not require any particular ability other than motivation and common sense. In case of activities requiring particular abilities, those are mentioned in the Task list.

Each volunteer will be assigned a person whose job is:

  • to make sure of the direction and training at the start of the volunteer period;
  • to define the objectives and to check the necessary means are at hand to reach them;
  • to monitor the volunteer in the fulfilment of his/her work.

The duration of the involvement in the « Assumption Lay people Volunteers » programme is flexible: in some cases a job for only a few weeks is possible. Other jobs are requiring a 12 months involvement. In some cases, the initially fixed duration may be extended.

There is no rigid starting day. Each volunteer starts the period at the most convenient time regarding civil and school year.

The required mission in every job is fulfilled based on a forty hours week. Weekends are normally free. Two and a half days holiday are given for each month spent on the programme and which must be taken before the completion of the agreed length of the commitment to the « Assumption Lay people Volunteers » programme.

2- Spiritual side

The « Assumption Lay people Volunteers » programme is proposed by the catholic religious congregation of the Augustinians of the Assumption.

Each job is set out in liaison with one of our communities. If he/she wants, the volunteer may live that time as a spiritual and human deepening and nourishing time. He/she is invited to take part in the prayer life of the community and to meet often its members. If he/she wants, he/she may find a spiritual adviser among the community members.

However the « Assumption Lay people Volunteers » programme is also open to persons far removed from the faith and from the Church. But of course the volunteer will have to show a minimum of kindly opened mind regarding the mission and the aims of the community.

3- Miscellaneous

When the volunteer duration is at least of 4 months, a contract fixing the work and the life conditions is signed by the volunteer and one of the Assumptionists in charge of the programme before the start of the volunteer period. If the mission is abroad, we use to provide the volunteer a synthesis file about the country in which he/she will have to work.

Material aspects:

  • Accommodation is arranged as the case may be: for a volunteer alone, the community may take care of it, as well as of meals and laundering. In some other cases, the volunteer will have to find out his/her accommodation and to be self organised during the volunteer duration.
  • When the duration is over 4 months, the Assumption pays to the volunteer a monthly amount of 150 euros as being pocket money.
  • When the duration is over 6 months, the Assumption subscribes near « Axa Assistance » an insurance policy « private individuals Attendance » for between 6 and 12 months. It contains insurance for persons including the larger guarantee.
  • When the duration is at least of 12 months, and if the volunteer is alone, the Assumption will provide a round-trip ticket.
  • Insurance and Social Security: as much as possible, we wish the volunteer to be covered by himself. If he/she is not, solutions are looked at as the case may be.

FAQ

1) May I choose my job?

Yes, we do accept always a candidate for the job he has chosen, insofar as it is not yet occupied. A volunteer will never be posted for a job or at a place he doesn’t want.

2) Which spiritual implication is expected from me?

The spiritual aspect is essential in the Assumption Volunteers programmes. They have been conceived to help the volunteers to deepen their faith and their relationship with God. Thanks to shared tasks with the volunteers, we want to take part to the Coming of the Kingdom. Volunteers are invited to share the life of the community where it stands, and prayers in particular.

3) What are the financial conditions? Will I have enough to live on?

Accommodation, meals and laundering are provided by the community where the volunteer is living. He/she is given 150 euros a month. If he/she is not protected by Social Security, the Assumption will arrange it for the volunteer duration.

4) Do I have a car to possess?

No. If the mission needs to use one, it will be given by the community linked to the volunteer.

5) Are non French candidates admitted?

Yes, but for a volunteer period of at least 12 months. Be careful: we will never accept a candidate without a private meeting in order to discuss about motivations, personal background, expectations, etc … Therefore no need to send us an applicant form from a country where such a meeting is not possible since the Assumption has no community there.

6) Which housing conditions?

The volunteer lives in an assumption community where he has his/her own bedroom. Therefore he/she may use the community facilities.

7) Which impact has the time I am ready to devote to a volunteer experience?

A 12 months commitment, although non compulsory, is the desirable duration: it enables indeed the volunteer to have time enough for measuring the context and the mission, with meantime a true pastoral work for a genuine benefit . A 4 to 6 months duration could make the volunteer stop the experience at the very time when he/she was starting to feel him/herself at ease. A 12 months duration also enables to offer a larger range of services since it gives time for training.

8) How long for the applying process?

At least 2 months are necessary, from the reception of the applying file and the start of the volunteer time. The Assumption has settled a small team for selecting candidates which is working permanently. Be careful: a non complete file will of course lengthen the time limit.

9) Which working conditions?

A volunteer usually works only during the working days about 40 hours/ week. He may be asked occasionally to work at evening or at weekend if any need, with some resting time in return.
